Menace, a young producer form Manchester in the United Kingdom landed two major music productions in the American market. After landing productions on both Kanye West, and Desiigner’s latest projects, he is working on creating a lot of new productions.
When he first created Desiigner’s “Panda” beat, he didn’t realize what impact the song would have until the song went viral and he saw notifications on his Twitter. Once “Panda” was a hit, Desiigner then landed the producer a production spot on Kanye’s latest album, “The Life of Pablo.” Read the exclusive details on how Menace got his latest opportunities and what he is doing since creating for Good Music.
HHW: What is your name? And where are you from?
Menace: My real name is Adnan Khan, but my producer name is “Menace.” I got that name from after school. Kids would say I’m a menace and I mess around too much. I was born and raised in the UK. My entire family is from the UK. I come from an Asian background but my parents were born and raised in this country.Right now I live in Manchester.
Menace: I’ve been producing for 10 years now. I am 22 and I started around 12 years old. At first it was just a hobby, but it wasn’t until 2 years ago that I started to take things a bit more serious.
HHW: What made you decide to take producing more seriously?
Menace: First of all, it was a passion, but when I realized my hobby started to make me money, I said this isn’t a hobby anymore it’s a career now.
HHW: What was one of your first big songs or productions?
Menace: Well first it was the Kanye West song, but before that, it was Young Noble from Outlaws. I also created the Desiigner Panda track.
HHW: Have you come overseas to work with these artists that are using your productions in America?
Menace: No, I’ve pretty much been doing what I’m doing now from the UK. It’s just become that much of a craze in America, the type of music I create. The American market I thought would be a better market because nothing much was happening here until people started jumping on the wave. People didn’t think I was from the UK making music like this.
HHW: Is there a lot of Hip-Hop and Rap influenced music where you are from?
Menace: Yes there is. It’s become really wide spread. But it’s becoming more popular in my country. We have a genre called “Grime” and it’s basically trap music but much more energetic, it has a really fast tempo and it’s just full of energy. You probably heard about Drake’s instagram when he was posting a lot about Top Boy, a UK program he watches often. It’s getting big, but my scene is more urban based.
HHW: Is the “Panda” beat considered the Grime genre?
Menace: It had a lot of grime influences and the energy was there. I just put some of the Menace touch to it.
HHW: Is it true that you gave Desiigner your beat for $200? Explain how he ended up with your beat.
Menace: Yeah because I have a website where I sell my beats and he was one of the people who was buying them. I only found out about designer because someone re-tweeted me his sing on twitter and then I found out more about him. My website is www.officialmenace.com.
