He plans to release his new project titled, “Yours Truly” this summer and continue his momentum. Read below of how the Rochester rapper began his music career and the work he continues to do while putting out his music.
HHW: Why did you start doing music? What made you decide to start rapping?
Shawn Brown: I was in college and didn’t have much going on. In 2011, I met a guy named, "JK," who had a studio and I pretty much made it a hobby to record music. It really started off as a hobby for me.
Shawn Brown: Well I’ve been doing it for the past 4-5 years. But this past year I really decided to give it my all and drop a project to see how people would react. That helped me decide whether I should make this a hobby or go for it.
HHW: Do you have any other careers besides rapping?
Shawn Brown: I’ve only had regular 9-5 jobs, but other than that I’ve been investing all my time into music.
HHW: Have you ever thought of doing anything else?
Shawn Brown: I go to school for accounting and I’m passionate about that. But, I have my focus on music first and I’ll definitely put the music first before balancing books.
HHW: Where do you go to school?
Shawn Brown: I go to a community college here in Rochester. I am actually in my last year.
HHW: What influences your music?
Shawn Brown: Pretty much my life experiences. I try to write from my points of view first and hope people can relate to it. I pretty much about things I want to do or write about things I want to get done.
HHW: When did you realize this was something you wanted to take serious?
Shawn Brown: This past October when I dropped my first project and people really had a good reaction. After that, I said let
me see where I can really go with this. I really started pushing everything after that.
HHW: Who helped you get your foot into the door (in the music industry)?
Shawn Brown: My manger Katt really helped me. He’s been the person that helped me grind and network with everybody. My cousin June helped me a lot to get the ball rolling too. They’ve both really pushed me and helped me get my music out there.
